Your job is to ensure that learners see an appropriate mix of patient types and procedures, regardless of the clinical sites that they attend. You need to make sure they all see the same clinical experiences, but you can’t know in advance, for example, that General Surgery at Hospital X will provide the same experiences as General Surgery at Hospital Y. What do you do?
In order to graduate competent doctors, you need to set and communicate the types of patient diagnoses and procedures that learners need to experience during their training. Then comes the hard part: you must ensure that learners actually see and do these things at an appropriate level before they graduate. To make things worse, you need to know if they aren’t doing the right things, and you need to know this early enough to do something about it. With learners working at multiple sites to get the same experiences, this type of complex tracking can be a challenge. Skillbook is designed to solve these challenges.
Set and communicate expectations
Expectation Grids, Counts & Categories
Create Expectation Grids to show your learners at a glance the encounters they need to have, how many of each encounter they need, and at which participation levels. You can break the grids down into specific skill areas to tell learners, for example, that they need to observe five heart procedures on elderly patients as part of their Cardiology rotation.
Progress indicators show how close learners are to meeting their experience requirements. The color progress indicators appear in-line with their expectation grids, so learners can see what’s required of them and how close they are to achieving each requirement.
Track different types of data in different ways
Custom procedure and diagnosis lists
Multiple approval workflows
- If you want to certify, you can have learners apply for competency once they’ve completed a certain number of procedures at an appropriate participation level
- If you want to review individual entries, you can have supervisors sign off on entries once they are completed and provide feedback to learners
- If you just want to track data, you can remove all sign off workflows and communicate expectations through counts, categories, and green/red progress indicators
Easy, mobile entry
Skillbook works on mobile devices so that learners can access it from anywhere. Each data entry form contains quick pick lists along with save and repeat shortcuts. We make data entry as easy as possible for your busy learners.
Report and distribute data to all stakeholders
Personalized reporting tools let your learners see where they stand against program requirements, what they’ve done so far, and what upcoming requirements they must meet. Progress is clearly marked with color indicators.
Flexible administrator reports
Your team can use Skillbook’s reporting features to compare learners against one another and against program requirements. Compare different procedures and patient encounters against expectation grids and across clinical experiences to see if your clinical sites are consistently providing the experiences learners need for graduation.
Automatic director reports
Review the data that learners are submitting on an ongoing basis with convenient weekly email summaries for program directors. You can also use Skillbook in combination with Webeval to track whether or not your team is reviewing the data.
